Native Plant Garden

The waterfall in the Native Plant Garden. Before modern New York transformed its landscape, the Hudson Bay area teemed with an abundance of native plants and animals, many of which have slipped toward extinction or become difficult to find. The Native Plant Garden is a lush showcase of many of the native ferns, wild Lady Slipper Orchids, Swamp Azaleas, Columbine, and other plant species that once fringed the bay.

Lady Slipper Orchids grow wild in the Native Plant Garden. Here, find a magical place of bubbling waterfalls, streams and ponds, an earthy glade studded with the same Birch trees that native New Yorkers onced carved into canoes. The Turtle Sanctuary and the Story Circle both find their home in the Native Plant Garden, making it a delight for children of all ages. The Native Plant Garden’s environment is fragile - come for a guided tour any Saturday between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. If you would like to arrange a special visit, or to bring your school group for an educational tour, contact the Garden’s caretakers.
