Turtle Sanctuary

The Turtle Sanctuary in the Native Plant Garden.

Many species of turtles, including Eastern Box, Painted, Musk, Wood and Spotted species, once roamed the New York waterfronts, but progress and habitat destruction have driven many of them close to extinction. The Native Plant Garden, with its ponds and native growth, has been designated an official Turtle Sanctuary, the first outdoor space in the New York area to protect endangered and threatened species of native turtles.

An Eastern Box Turtle, native to New York City and the Hudson Bay.The ecology of the Turtle Sanctuary is fragile, and the turtles are shy, so arrange your tour, or bring your school group for visit with the turtles and an exciting lesson on environmental awareness, by contacting the Garden’s administrators.
