Zen Garden

The meditative Zen Garden has been restored as a Memorial to the Victims of September 11.

The traditional Zen Garden is a landscape of pebbles and stones arranged to provide a place of meditation, contemplation and enlightenment. Here, the rocks, stones and boulders of the Zen Garden re-create an evocative microcosm of New York City and Hudson Bay.

The island of Manhattan is represented by three large stones: one stone representing the Empire State Building, and the other two representing the Twin Towers as we remember them. The rock formation on the south side of the Garden represents the Verrazano Bridge linking Brooklyn and Staten Island. In the center of the rippling pebble Hudson Bay, an Asian lantern represents the Statue of Liberty.

In the meditative Zen Garden, the rocks and boulders have been placed to represent the City of New York.Although the Zen Garden was recently vandalized, it has recently been carefully restored and redicated in September, 2004, as a memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.

The restoration of the Zen Garden and its dedication as a memorial have been made possible solely through donations. There is still more to be done. Click here to find out how you can contribute to this spot of beauty and solace that is the Zen Garden.

Visit the Zen Garden for a moment of peace, tranquility and contemplation.
