Visitor guidelines
Helpful tips on what to bring, what to leave at home, and a few guidelines for exploring our gardens safely and respectfully.
Park Rules
NBG and our visitors are subject to all New York City Parks rules.
-
The garden’s 4.5 acres are open in all weather conditions. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable attire for exploration. Plan to carry your own water when visiting NBG. If you need a refill or fountain, consider stopping at a park facility with amenities nearby before or after your visit.

Narrows Botanical Gardens is a carefully maintained landscape shaped by decades of volunteer care. To help protect the gardens, please stay on designated paths, avoid entering planted beds, and do not pick or remove plants, flowers, or garden materials. For everyone’s safety and the health of the landscape, climbing trees or garden structures is not permitted. By respecting the gardens, you help preserve their beauty, balance, and long-term care for all visitors.
-
Narrows Botanical Gardens is home to a variety of native wildlife that depends on the gardens for shelter and habitat. Please observe animals quietly and from a distance, and do not feed, touch, or disturb wildlife, including turtles, skunks, birds, and pollinators. Respecting wildlife helps protect their health and ensures the gardens remain a safe, balanced environment for both animals and visitors.
-
Picnicking is welcome on the Great Lawn and is a wonderful way to enjoy Narrows Botanical Gardens. To help protect the lawn and keep the space enjoyable for everyone, please use blankets to protect the grass, dispose of all trash properly, and avoid placing items on planted areas. Open flames, alcohol, and amplified sound are not permitted without a NYC Parks permit. Your care helps preserve this shared green space for all visitors.
-
Pets are welcome at Narrows Botanical Gardens and throughout the park. For the safety of all visitors and to protect the gardens, dogs must be leashed and kept under control at all times, and pet owners are required to clean up after their animals. Please help keep pets out of planted beds and wildlife areas so the gardens remain a safe and enjoyable space for everyone.
-
To help keep Narrows Botanical Gardens healthy and welcoming, smoking is not permitted anywhere in the gardens or surrounding parkland. Keeping the gardens smoke-free and litter-free helps protect plants, wildlife, and the shared experience of this community space.
Per NYC Parks rules, smoking is prohibited at NBG and at all parks, beaches, and pedestrian plazas. Visit the Smoke-Free Parks page to learn more.
-
To ensure the gardens remain accessible and enjoyable for all visitors, organized activities such as group classes, performances, or large gatherings are not permitted without prior approval. This includes unsanctioned yoga classes, fitness sessions, or organized events. Permits help protect the landscape and ensure activities align with NYC Parks guidelines and the needs of the community.
Your care and cooperation help ensure that Narrows Botanical Gardens remains a welcoming, healthy space for everyone.
Thank you for helping protect this special place.
